Lifelong Learning Accounts
Did you know…that the amount of new technical information is doubling every two years? It is predicted to double every 72 hours by 2010. As this technology and information-driven economy continues to grow, workers will need advanced education and training to land and keep good paying, non-exportable jobs.
For Kansas City organizations to effectively compete in today's knowledge-based economy, employees with up-to-date skills and education are needed. Yet for many, the high cost of education and training has limited their options. Lifelong Learning Accounts (LiLAs) are a new way to help meet this need. LiLAs are employee-owned education savings accounts that help pay for education and training expenses. LiLAs are like a 401(k) in that employees make regular contributions that are matched by their employer. In some cases, scholarship monies are available that match employee contributions.
My LiLA Now is an innovative lifelong learning accounts pilot program for the Kansas City Bi-State Region. It initially targets three industry sectors; advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, and healthcare. These high growth industries offer, high value, high demand, high paying jobs to the region's workforce and at the same time, builds a stronger regional economy.
My LiLA Now is one of several initiatives under OneKC WIRED (Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development) funded by the U.S. Department of Labor - Employment and Training Administration.
